Celebrating Earth Month
Maola Local Dairies farmers are using tree planting and conservation practices to protect our communities and waterways — one stream at a time
At Maola Local Dairies, sustainability is more than a buzzword—it’s a daily commitment by our family-owned dairy farms across our region. Our farmers are leading the way in environmental stewardship. One way they are doing it is by planting riparian buffers—rows of native trees and vegetation along streams—to naturally filter runoff, reduce erosion, and improve water quality. These efforts are crucial for the health of the Chesapeake Bay and the communities we serve.
Through partnerships with organizations like the Alliance for the Chesapeake Bay, Maola farmers have planted thousands of trees on over 70 acres of farmland. These riparian buffers act as natural filtration systems, removing excessive nutrients, pesticides, and animal waste from entering rivers and streams. Additionally, they stabilize eroding river and stream banks, provide wildlife habitat, and protect downstream communities from flood damage
Our commitment to sustainability doesn’t stop there. Maola farmers also employ practices like no-till farming, cover cropping, and modernized manure management to preserve soil health and reduce greenhouse gas emissions. These initiatives are part of our broader goal to achieve greenhouse gas neutrality by 2050.
